My Best Foot Forward

Dress it up!

The holidays are a special time of year, filled with parties, tempting goodies, and, of course, a little extra sparkle. This newsletter will give you some ideas on how to dress things up for the holidays.

Sequins

Sequins are always a given this time of year. This is a sequined tank (but only in the front as it's cotton in the back) from The Loft. Pair this with jeans, and if it's chilly, top it with a blazer. Opt for a metallic heel or some sparkly jewelry and you're ready! Remember, in general, blondes can wear gold and brunettes can wear silver.

Velvet

Velvet always returns each winter and is a good holiday option. Here's a velvet blazer from White House, Black Market. I lovethat they have paired it with this season's jewelry of choice, the statement necklace. Keep the rest simple with just a white blouse or a white, dark purple, pink, red or black tank. A velvet blazer is something you can wear with jeans, tweed pants, or a skirt after the holidays are over.

Jewelry

Again, I love the above picture as it's a great illustration of how a statement necklace can make a simple outfit very chic. Another easy option is to pair a statement necklace with a black dress. That, too, says holiday. Club Monaco, J.Crew, Banana Republic, Forever 21 and many other stores have great options. Pick something that doesn't hang too low so that it doesn't fight with the bust line.

If you aren't comfortable with a necklace, opt for a cocktail ring and/or a pair of chandelier earrings. Chandelier earrings have been around a long time and are here to stay. This is a beautiful pair from Banana Republic that would really help dress up an outfit.

Embellished Tees

If the parties you are going to are a little less casual, then an embellished tee is a good option. Here, the accessories are already built-in. I like this one from Ann Taylor because you can wear it with a blazer and still appreciate the detail. The Loft has some embellished tees as well.

I've also talked about embellished flats, which are still a good option if you are entertaining and don't want to be in heels all night. However, I still love a pair with just a sweater for an easy, casual look!

Dressy Heel

This is also the time of year to pick a dressy heel. I've shown this heel before, but I'm using it again because it's a metallic (which goes with everything - jeans, a skirt, pants et cetera), and you don't have to wear it with a skirt or dress to appreciate it. I like that the embellishment is on the toe of the shoe. There are a ton of fabulous shoes out there, but so many need to be worn with a skirt or dress in order to see every detail; these work either way.

I also like these shoes, which come in red and purple patent, because, again, you can wear them with jeans and still appreciate them. And, patent leather can be worn with a pair of trousers, a dress, or a skirt whereas a satin shoe is limited to just dressy occasions. Both shoes are from Nordstrom.

A Few Other Thoughts...

The holidays are that special time of year and hopefully I've given you some ideas and you can see yourself wearing these items at other times on the year. Pair some fabulous earrings with a black dress, a dressy pair of shoes with a black top and jeans and a velvet blazer with a skirt and pattern tights in January. However, I must point out that there are a few things to avoid. One, be careful not to overdo it. Sparkle, shimmer and shine are great, but too much, and you look like a disco ball. That's not good. A sequined tank, a statement necklace, embellished shoes and sparkly jewelry worn together is too much.

Number two - I would say no to sequined cardigans or even a cardigan with jewel buttons - why? To be perfectly honest, a cardigan with jeweled buttons can look old. A beautiful top with a cardigan is great, but jeweled buttons starts to look dowdy.

As far as sequined cardigans go - there have been a lot of these this season, like this one, however, I don't think these are very versatile. I think they're limiting and actually make a woman look bigger and bustier. I think you are better off with smaller, glittery items that mix 'n match with pieces you already own or buying items that you can wear again.

Lastly, you must avoid any holiday accoutrement in any wardrobe form, e.g. printed turtlenecks, pins, sweaters and the red and green ornament earrings. These are all just a no. The holidays do not mean that you have to wear red and green - just something special. Happy Holidays, Happy Shopping and Happy Organized Closet!
