Beyond Black Pants and a White Blouse
Clutch
As we know, every stylish woman has a great everyday purse, but she should also have a purse for going out at night. This doesn't mean a satin or beaded bag - those are for weddings and special occasions. A nighttime purse, or clutch, is usually leather or patent leather and is much smaller than what you carry during the day. Ideally, it shouldn't be a shoulder bag as it should say nighttime.
This dark purple clutch can make a casual outfit look dressy, or can help makes pieces of a suit look more appropriate for evening.
Silver and Gold Hoop Earrings
A stylish woman has some dressy jewelry, but you need some good day jewelry as well. You can do a pair of studs or pearls, but I like something
that one can actually see and appreciate. For example, I love these three tiered hoops from Nordstrom. I like that they aren't sparkly, but still have some movement. More importantly, you can see them, (especially since the majority of women have long hair). These would be great with a simple turtleneck or suit. You can make more of a statement with your jewelry, but something like these, (and opt for a pair in silver and a pair in gold), will go with just about anything.
Cocktail Ring
Aside from some fun daytime jewelry, I also suggest something great for
evening. Most women choose a pair of sparkly earrings and a necklace, however, I happen to love cocktail rings. A cocktail ring can be worn with any neckline, any type of dress, top or skirt. They also don't fight with long sleeves and easily off-set a pair of dressy earnings. Depending on the style, some can even be worn during the day. Try this one from Nordstrom that's just that little extra something for evening. J.Crew and Banana Republic also have a great selection.
Patterns
Everyone is okay with buying, mixing and wearing solids, but there is no reason to be afraid of patterns. A patterned top is one of the easiest ways to perk up your wardrobe and helps create some visual interest. A patterned dress, skirt or top will also keep the eye moving and avoid it
from focusing on one area. It doesn't make you more noticeable - just more interesting!
For patterns, be sure to keep it in proportion to the size of your body. Choose a pattern that is the size of your fist. And, if you are nervous with a print, tone it down with a jacket or simple cardigan. Again, if you are afraid, try it in small doses with a pattern shoe (try a lizard skin or a leopard shoe instead of just black), or opt for a small pattern tight.
The pattern on this top actually draws the eye to the center of the body, which is slimming, and also has some beautiful colors in it. Pair it with jeans or black pants or wear it under a jacket.
And, this skirt is fun because it can be worn with brown or black. However, a jacket or white blouse would also work - all pieces that are already a part of the Core Wardrobe, but a patterned item gives you a new way to wear the basics.
Metallic Heels
Lastly, a metallic shoe is a must because metallics go with everything! A pewter or a bronze colored heel is ideal. A black pair of heels are a must
own, but they don't go with everything. Sometimes a black shoe can be too harsh, however, a metallic shoe is a modern, contemporary option. Wear it with jeans or a black dress, and is the easiest option when wearing navy.
Here's a pair by Enzo from Nordstrom that come in silver and bronze. Love these with just a black top and jeans, which I know every woman owns!
These additional basics help pull an outfit together - for day or night. All of these items will stand the test of time and should help you create additional ensembles within your wardrobe. Question, let me know!
