Falling for the Trends
Since purple is the biggest trend, you can find it everywhere and in everything from skirts, coats, shoes, tights, sweaters, gloves, scarves et cetera. There are many different shades of purple and it's a very flattering color to wear so pick whatever item(s) you are comfortable with. However, I will say, that deep and more saturated colors are best.
The easiest item I think is a top, scarf or pair of shoes. For shoes, think of them as a replacement for your basic black heels or flats. I love a pair of purple flats with a black sweater and jeans or with the other big color for fall, grey. Try a grey sweater, jeans and purple shoes! A scarf is just as easy as it would look beautiful with a dark brown, black or even a patterned coat.
Grey has also returned this season (in pants, shoes, sweaters), but more importantly, in purses and I actually really love a fabulous grey bag! It's extremely versatile and very chic. Banana Republic has a few bags in this color. It's a little bit different than just black, but still a good neutral and a great fall purse.
Mustard yellow has also emerged as another color for fall. This is a hard color to wear so it's best to do it with accessories like a belt, bag, jewelry or another trend, colored tights. Tights have always been a fall staple, yet this season you can find them in such great colors - dark red, cobalt blue, mustard yellow, purple et cetera. It is best to keep the outfit simple as I wear mine with just a black skirt, turtleneck and flats or boots. The tights then become the main focus in the outfit!
Ruffles are another big trend this season. Again they are on tops, skirts, coats and even shoes. Just as with a bold pattern or color, ruffles need to be done in small doses or on one piece of clothing. I like these shoes by Steve Madden, which are not only in the color of the season, but have a great ruffled t-strap.
I will admit, statement necklaces, (ie very large necklaces), are hard to wear as you need something very plain to wear with them, but worn correctly and they can be, well, a statement! In order to pull this look off, you need either a very open neckline or a crewneck.
However, if you still want to have some fun with jewelry this season, then try layering a bunch of necklaces. Some jewelry is actually sold as already 'layered', but to do this on your own, try wearing a shorter necklace and then wearing one or two long necklaces. I like when the shorter necklace has a pendant or some sort of embellishment. This can actually be a very sliming look as it draws the eye to the center of the body and frames the face nicely.
