8 Style Tips for '08

Now that 2008 is here and resolutions have been made, this is a new beginning so let's talk about 8 things to try in '08. These things will of course accommodate every body type and size as proper style should.

The first item is something that can be worn now - the patterned tight. You don't have to do something wild, but any sort of a pattern is usually better than a solid. It's a bit more interesting and adds some texture to an outfit. If you're scared, then start out small and simple. Vertical stripes or little dots are always safe, yet still can add a pop to an outfit. My favorite is the "baby fishnets", which I get at Target, but patterned tights can be found at T.J.Maxx, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Wolford, et cetera.

Another fun and actually very flattering item is the bubble hem. Now this doesn't mean that you are going to look like a bubble --- instead it means that a hem line is not flat - it bubbles or is rounded at the bottom. It's an interesting design detail and is being carried through at the bottom of skirts, dresses and even shirt sleeves. This is a simple black dress from Nordstrom that illustrates the bubble hem on a dress.

This classic white blouse is also from Nordstrom and has a bubble sleeve.

We've all heard that accessories make an outfit and it's true. So for 2008, I think everyone should try a statement bag. Now this doesn't mean a "designer handbag", as those are way too expensive, but something that doesn't look cheap - something that makes a statement. It doesn't have to be in a bright color, but the material and hardware need to be good. Cheap handbags are hard to pull off -- it can be done with shoes, but not bags.

For example, I love this bag by Steve Madden and it's under $200! This bag is more of a work bag, but it looks way more expensive than it is! A good bag should last you a long time. Of course you can "fill in" with other fun bags, but nothing that looks cheap, too plasticy and it shouldn't be something that you can buy at Coach like every other teenage girl.

Another accessory that easy to try this year, is layering necklaces. The necklaces can be short or long or both, but I love the look because, again, it's a visual interest and something so easy to do. The necklaces can be different, but it's best to keep some common thread between them like the fact that they are both silver or both have turquoise in them - anything! One other note, as layered necklaces, (or long necklaces), are the ONLY kind of necklaces that are acceptable over a turtleneck - no necklace should be hanging out of the top of the turtleneck - ick!

Now for my favorite item - the platform. These made their comeback awhile ago and they are here to stay and that's because they're fabulous! Because of the extra "sole" in the front, they are much more comfortable than a regular heel and they make your legs, butt - really everything, look great. Plus it adds another inch without the pain and they can be worn with everything from trousers, jeans, skirts and dresses.

There is one word of caution for petites as they can sometimes be out of proportion and make petites look like they are ready to topple over. For this, I would suggest a platform with a lower or thinner heel or one with a "hidden" platform,(like the picture at the right). The fabric is actually wrapped around the platform part of the shoe. Both of these heels are from Nordstrom.

Aside from platforms, I think there is one other shoe that everyone should have or try in '08 -- either a driving moccasin or a cute gym shoe. I know not everyone is in to flats, but there are times when you need something casual and you don't want to wear a heel - well, this is your answer. Driving moccasins usually have a square or rounded toe and visable stiching. They can be patent leather, metallic or just leather. They're a classic style that has been around forever. They are great for traveling because they have rubber soles and are very flexible. I like them with pants, (especially jeans), or city shorts. Unfortunately, they don't look right with skirts.

However, if those are not your style, then a fun gym shoe, (not meant for working out), can do the trick. They too come in all sorts of styles, (slip-on, tie, elastic) and colors. Again, I like these with anything except a skirt. All of these shoes are from Nordstrom.

Another item that everyone has heard me preach about is city shorts. Why? Well, they are much more stylish and flattering than capris and way more versatile. They look great with a tunic, a wrap top, a t-shirt a jacket - really, anything! And unlike capris, these can actually be dressed up and they don't make you look like your standing in a bucket!

They can come with cuffs, without, with a thin leg or wide, but whatever you get, just make sure that they don't hit at your calf - they should be just above the knee, at the knee or right below. These are from The Loft.

Lastly, the most important things to try in '08, (or perhaps revisit), is working with a stylist! This gives you the chance to learn what styles, shapes and colors really work for you. In addition, I am an objective and fresh point of view to your wardrobe. Everyone has at least 15 new outfit combinations sitting in your closet that you haven't thought off and it does take a professional to point them out.

Nonetheless, I hope I have inspired everyone to try something new this year and I did pick things that ANYONE can do. None of the items in this newsletter are trendy or body type specific. Everyone can do a patterned tight - it's just picking the right one and pairing it with an outfit. I also believe everyone can wear a city short, layer a few necklaces, slip into a platform, carry a great bag, try a bubble hem, or put on a cute gym shoe.

With that said, I encourage everyone to get rid of 8 items by the end of January. If you can't get rid of 8 items, well then, you need my help! Eight new things in - eight old things out.
