My Best Foot Forward

Very Important Pieces for Fall

I think fall is the best time of the year - not only because of the weather, but because the fashion is so great! This season, by far, is no exception. There are a ton of trends to talk about and I've decided to address the ones that anyone and everyone can wear - no matter what your size or shape.

The biggest trend this season is the color grey. Dresses, trousers, belts, tights, shoes, et cetera - grey is the new black. Things really pop against grey, where as they sometimes look boring when pair with black. Remember, anyone can paired something with black; pairing it with grey takes a little more thought, but makes it oh so much better!

There is one word of caution as grey can wash some people out, so take this trend and wear it in a trouser, a skirt, a bag or even an all black outfit and a fabulous grey shoe - so easy! I will say it again - shoes are it. They make or break an outfit - ESPECIALLY with this trend. If you are wearing a grey clothing item, then you MUST have a grey or metallic shoe. For example, if you are wearing a grey skirt and a light blue top and then a black shoe - well, ick. That makes it look like you had nothing else to wear, so you wore your black shoes. If I see a woman in a grey dress or pair of pants, I don't automatically think "oh, she's instyle" as it has to be a current application of this trend - she needs a metallic shoe, and then I would say, "great outfit".

This grey trend also looks fabulous with a red lip and believe it or not, you can wear this look during the day. Just opt to only play up your lips and keep your eye makeup simple.

One other note on the specific shade of grey - medium to dark-skinned women can wear a dove grey, while women with a fair complexion should stick to the darker tones.

Some other trendy colors have emerged this fall like fuschia and cobalt blue. These are fabulous as they look great with grey, black or brown. They are also extremely flattering. I have been searching for a great top or dress in the cobalt blue, but haven't had any luck so I decided to incorporate this trend with an opaque tight. However, I also have my eyes on a pair of cobalt blue leather gloves at Lord & Taylor (and this coat is also from Lord & Taylor) - this is something that anyone can wear and really adds some oomph to any outfit!

Another color trend that is very big is black and gold. Again, this is being done in everything from shoes, bags, jewelry and belts. This trend is one of the easiest to pull off with a pair of black trousers (or skirt), a classic white blouse and a black and gold shoe. Accessorize with a pair of gold earnings or bracelets and you're done - voila - hip and trendy! I particularly love these shoes from Nine West as they have my last name, 'Cellini' - and they also come in cobalt and fushia :) This purse is from Ann Taylor.

While black and gold is very classic, so is houndstooth. This has been around forever and it comes back every fall like leopard, but it has now been given new life in fun coats, bags and gloves. This is a cropped jacket, (which is still in for fall), by Michael Kors. It's even offered in a bag from Banana Republic, which is a little more limiting, but still a great accessory.

Another popular trend has been the wide leg trousers. Remember that the ones pictured in fashion magazines are meant for editorial as the legs are extremely wide and a bit of an exaggeration. However, this is a great trend as it can be very flattering for a lot of women - much more than the skinny jean! This is true for women who carry their weight in their hips or it can help balance out a woman's body if she carries her weight in the upper half. The key to working this trend, is picking a style that is in proportion to your body and choose something that you will still love next year.

Aside from wide leg trousers, capes are actually another great trend that really can be worn for any body type. They are surprisingly versatile because they can be worn with jeans and boots yet can be dressed up and worn with a skirt or a cocktail dress. I also love to take mine when I travel as I can use it as a pillow and can throw it on over whatever I'm wearing - a chunky sweater, a close-fitting turtleneck - anything!

Now for body types - capes look great on pears when it's belted at the waist as it helps add volume to the top half which balances out their lower half and belted - well that shows off their defined waist. The same is true for an hourglass as I always wear mine belted. For apples, capes work well because they just float over the body and are very elegant and chic. Lastly, for rectangles, capes are good because belted, they can help define a waist and create those feminine curves that a rectangle needs. Petites do need to be careful as some of the styles out there can be overwhelming if you have a small frame - whether you cinch it or not.

This cape from Nordstrom, also comes in grey and black -- which I would love with a leopard belt!

A few last notes on fall accessories. Long gloves are huge this season and they're especially great with cropped jackets or capes. Cuff bracelets are also very popular and these are especially great when worn over gloves. I would try a black and gold one - or even just a simple silver one to wear with something houndstooth. Lastly, cocktail rings are always fun and these are great worn with fall knits and again, if you have the élan, then try wearing them over gloves. Super chic!

I encourage everyone to try incorporate (or at least) try on one of the trends I have mentioned here as these are all approachable and although they are labeled "trendy" now, a grey skirt, a wide leg trouser, a beautiful fushia blouse, a classic black and gold purse, an elegant cape or long gloves, will last and always, always, always look beautiful and make you feel wonderful.

And if you can't see how these trends would apply to you, give me a chance to show you how - you will be surprised at the potential you have - it's just a matter of getting it out! Don't you want to feel fabulous?
