My Best Foot Forward

The long and the short of it

Ah, the joys of summer – skirts, sandals, the beach, the sun and ick, shorts. I know that lots of people don’t wear shorts and I can understand why as I am one of them, but I have to say that the “city shorts” are a great alternative. Moreover, they are so much better than capris!

Something better than capris?! What’s so wrong with capris? Well, as everyone knows, capris, like cropped pants or pants that are too short, (ie ones that DON’T brush the toe of your shoe), tend to shorten you…considerably. With capris, we see so little leg, but with the new “city shorts”, we get to see much more leg, therefore making you look taller and leaner. Remember, any time we can add height, then that helps balance out width.

These city shorts are also great because they can be dressy or casual, whereas regular shorts are usually so casual. These new shorts can be worn with wedges, flip flops, wrap sandals, slides, and my favorite, closed-toed flats. Super chic, easy to walk in, and for some offices, the city shorts with a pair of flats and a blazer is very appropriate for casual Fridays.

Now a word on length - if you are petite, (5’4” and under), then it is best to keep your new city shorts right above or just at the knee. If you are taller, then they can dip just below the knee.

Also, I know that people also gravitate towards capris as they want to cover up thick calves however, don’t fear, because the city shorts are great for this issue as well. Again, keep the length to or just above the knee so that they doesn’t end at the calf; accentuating it. And don’t worry, people will not be fixated on your calves; it’s the idea that we are seeing more skin and more leg that will make you look taller, not exactly a specific part of the leg.

These shorts will still keep you cool, are very chic and most importantly, are extremely flattering. Of course don’t feel that you have to run out and replace all your capris as you can actually have your capris hemmed. Just as a tailor would hem a pair pants, they can also hem your capris. As long as you like the line of the leg on your capris, (how they fit through the hip and thigh), then they will work at the new length.
