My Best Foot Forward

Getting a leg up

What type of nylons can I wear? What about hose with open-toed shoes? What do you do in the winter? This issue of the “Monthly Fashion Update” will answer all these questions and more!

Nylons use to be de rigueur in the world of fashion, but nowadays they can easily be considered a fashion faux pas - especially hose with open-toed shoes. This is never stylish. However, if you are wearing a pair of open-toed shoes, even in the winter, it is perfectly okay not to wear anything on your legs.

And speaking of dressing up, it also used to be the norm for nylons to be worn to a formal event, such as a wedding. Well, the rules have changed and hose are now considered optional. They work only if they go with the rest of your outfit. If you feel you have to wear something, I think a sheer black nylon with the seam up the back of leg is still classic, yet still a bit sexy and unexpected.

Aside from these, I prefer a patterned nylon. This is a much more modern look than nude hose and adds a bit of texture to an outfit. However, anyone who has thick calves should avoid any sort of nylon with a large, chunky pattern as this can actually add weight to one’s leg. Therefore, it is best to stay with a simple and small design.

If this whole nylon issue stresses you out, then you can avoid the issue altogether and wear pants! Which speaking of pants, a great way to pull together an outfit is with a pair of trouser socks – with a pattern of course. This is the perfect little touch to an outfit that proves that style is all in the details.

Nonetheless, whatever you decide to wear, remember that the rules have changed and it is ok to have bare legs. Most situations these days are not as formal as they used to be so nylons are not really necessary, but have fun adding in a pattern to spice up an outfit.
