My Best Foot Forward

Six more weeks of Winter

Bad news: the groundhog saw his shadow and as we all know, that means we have six more weeks of winter. However, the good news is that this “Monthly Fashion Update” will give you ideas on how to stay chic and stylish throughout the remaining winter.

The easiest and probably cheapest way to add some winter chic to your wardrobe is with a fabulously colored scarf. Even with a simple winter coat, a beautiful scarf can add some much needed visual interest and a great color by your face. With all the drab colors of winter, why not opt for a beautiful magenta, teal or even a patterned scarf would work well too.

A great coat is also an easy way to wake-up your winter wardrobe. I know that a coat is a big ticket item, but choosing one that has subtle details like decorated buttons, embroidering or a special trim makes it unique and perks up your wardrobe.

A fabulous purse is always the perfect item to own and most certainly makes a statement. A good purse says as much about you as your shoes. Plus, just like your shoes, people always see your purse. Again, having a purse in a wonderful color is the perfect way to add a punch to your winter wardrobe. If you don’t want a bold color, then opt for something with exquisite quality and unique little details. Also, remember, your purse shouldn’t be stuffed to the brim. It’s often said that the smaller a woman’s purse, the more in control she is. However, if you do have to carry a lot of stuff, try to choose something other than a backpack. A tote is a great alternative and can still fit all your belongings.

And speaking of shoes, it’s extremely important to keep them in good condition in the winter. Be sure to polish leather and wipe them off at the end of the day with a soft cloth – even if your shoes aren’t leather, cleaning them is still a good idea as this will just ensures that the salt and snow won’t ruin your beautiful shoes! And, as long as your shoes are in good condition, they can be a wonderful accent to a basic winter outfit. Try shoes with a different texture like snake skin or the basic, black patent-leather, which is very easy to clean.

If you are feeling brave enough, try to mix in a patterned tight. Fun tights are the perfect accent in the winter because it’s inexpensive and easy. Even if you don’t wear an outfit that would lend itself to showing off your legs, just wear a pair of patterned trouser socks. My favorite look is the nylon-fishnet that you can buy at Target. Everyone can get away with fishnet trousers socks no matter how old you are! So chic, yet, so simple!
