Flirting with Fall
Some of my favorite issues of the “Monthly Fashion Update” are the ones addressing what’s new each the season. I love these issues because they focus on the current trends in a fun way without making us a slave to fashion. Just touches of a new trend are a great way to update your wardrobe.
My favorite trend for fall is actually one that has been carried over from the summer…metallics. However, instead of wearing metallic flip flops and open-toed sandals, it’s now time to usher in metallic T-strap shoes, fun embellishments on blazers, purses, bangles and anything with a little shine.
Another big trend is anything with a “victorian” or “romantic” feeling. This trend is great, but you should really only incorporate one item because otherwise you will look like you’re in the wrong century! Puffy shirts, lacy tops, ruffles, et cetera are all a throw back to a time when clothes had a much more feminine feel.
All the other items that are “in” for fall, just like the closet staples, haven’t really changed except for the color and style. For example, velvet is huge this season, but this is a staple that never fades. A velvet blazer always looks great with jeans and is easy to dress up or down. However, this year we are now seeing them offered in an array of smoldering shades like deep blue, green and burnt orange.
Black is also back, but not in the normal way that we are use to seeing it. This time, designers have added some unique embellishments which really spice up this closet basic. Just remember, that all black all the time really isn’t chic…it’s boring, so add a color, or better yet, some metallics.
Of course fall wouldn’t be the fabulous fashion season that it is without to-the-knee boots. Again, these are another closet basic that works well with skirts, dress pants, jeans, et cetera. A low heel is very in this season, but again, just choose whatever style works for you…as long as it isn’t chunky! Tall boots are great because they keep you warm, are super stylish and they go with just about everything.
Just as the season changes, so will your wardrobe, but don’t be afraid to invest in a few of the fabulous pieces available this fall. If you find a luxurious black coat or a jewel-toned velvet blazer that looks amazing on you, then it will quickly become a closet staple. Use these trends as a fun thing, but also as a way to acquire some of the wardrobe basics.
