My Best Foot Forward

What to keep from the trends of summer

Before the summer flies by once again, I wanted to take this opportunity to address the last of the summer trends. If you want to jump on the bandwagon, the time is now because these trends will soon be out the door. So, as soon as the summer starts to dwindle down, start folding away your bohemian chic clothes, chucky beads, tunics, sequined flats and long shorts because no one wants to be outdated…yuck!

One of the most popular trends this summer was the bohemian chic look (tunics, flowy tired skirts, beaded flats and hobo bags). This trend was fun, yet unfortunately, it gave people like Britney Spears, another excuse to be sloppy. I also fear that it gave people some bad fashion ideas because in order to wear the flowy multi-tired skirts, you need to have a structured piece on top like a blazer or a fitted tank. Otherwise, the look becomes messy and that is never stylish. The hobo bags were great because you could fit everything in them but the kitchen sink, except there is a caveat for petite women…these bags are just too overwhelming on such a small frame. Again, take the trends, (for whatever season), in moderation and only wear what works for you.

However, not everything was bad with the bohemian look as there was one good thing - the tunic. This was a welcomed trend because it was a fun, easy and instantly looked dressy with all the intricate beading. These tunics are also great for women who are pregnant in the summer because it’s light-weight, stylish and because of the side slits, it’s very easy to wear over a pregnant belly. I also like the tunic because this is a piece that I would pull out again next summer…not necessarily to wear over jeans, but to wear over a swim suit. These tunics are a wonderful cover up by the water and definitely worth saving because they will not look dated pool side next summer.

Chunky beads are also another hot trend right now, but this trend is tricky because like the bohemian trend, it’s very noticeable. Have fun with it right now, but don’t be pressured to buy a very expensive necklace or bracelets because you won’t get to wear it for very long. Delicate and layered necklaces may be in next – you never know!

Lastly, long shorts were also around this summer and even though it was a new trend, this is not something that will be “out of style” next year. This is because the line on these shorts is so classic and simple. Again, with a great pair of flats, these shorts quickly become a closet staple. They are more flattering than capris, cooler than pants and much more casual than a skirt. Hang on to these shorts and if you change your mind next summer…then you can always have them hemmed!

So, as the summer must come to an end, so will these trends, but keep in mind, that with a little creativity, and some basic fashion knowledge, your closet will be as up to date as the stars in Hollywood.
