Breaking all the "rules"
The spring and summer is a fun time for activities, friends and fashion. However, the style “rules” have changed. This issue of the “Monthly Fashion Update” will focus on some old and new “rules” that have changed the way we dress.
The first old “rule” that is appropriate to address in the month of May is the notion of not wearing white before Memorial Day. This used to be a very strict rule, along with not wearing white after Labor Day, however, now it’s completely acceptable to wear white before AND after these dates. These dates should just be a guideline, so don’t be afraid to wear your white jeans, sandals, and other items before the big Memorial Day parade.
Now, just because you are wearing white shoes before Memorial Day, doesn’t mean that your bag has to be white as well. The old belief that your purse and shoes have to match no longer applies. Instead, your bag and shoes should act as the neutrals in your ensemble or should be the punch of color that a simple outfit needs. Or one item could be a neutral, such as your shoes, and your purse could be a bright, vibrant color. Whatever the occasion, feel free to mix it up and have fun pairing different things together and don’t always think that everything has to coordinate.
Wearing nylons has also become passé. Bare or nude legs are a much simpler look and more comfortable as well. However, it is acceptable to wear nylons in the colder months, but be sure that you are not wearing open-toed shoes! My suggestion for when you have to wear something on your legs is to make sure that it has a fun pattern…diamonds, polka dots, stripes, et cetera, but be careful because patterns add weight to someone who might already have thick calves. The less busy the pattern, the better.
Last but not least, I don’t want everyone to be consumed by all the “don’ts”, so I decided to end this issue on a positive note with some spring and summer items that will never go out of style…no matter what the “rules” may be.
