My Best Foot Forward

Did the groundhog really see his shadow?

Although we have been tempted with some warm weather, it’s not quite time to break out the summer whites and open-toed shoes. However, that still doesn’t mean that we can’t take a peek into the new trends for Spring. That’s why this issue of the “Monthly Fashion Update” focuses on the fun and inexpensive trends that everyone can partake of this season.

The great thing about Spring shopping is the welcome back of color! It’s a wonderful change from our dark and dreary clothing of winter, and this year, color is all the rage. Coral and turquoise make a big splash and are so versatile because they look good on just about everyone. The biggest pattern this Spring is actually a “coral” pattern (the patter on shoe in the background picture), but just adding touches of coral to your wardrobe would be enough for a fun update…try a coral top, bag, a pair of sandals, or even a great necklace with a coral pendant with a basic white tank top and a jean jacket - this can truly capture the look of the season.

However, don’t just think of wearing these fun colors with the basics (black, white, brown etc.), instead, experiment with unusual combinations like turquoise and pink or coral with navy. Navy is always a great color to own, because it’s like the basic black of Spring and this season is no exception. The sailor look is very big – think navy and white stripes, sailor pants (wide-leg pants with big buttons on the hip)…anything with a nautical theme is fun and fresh, just don’t take it overboard, (pun intended)! Feel free to add colorful accessories to this classic navy and white look like red, pink, or even lime green…hey, that’s what accessories are for right?!

Another great trend this Spring is the return of wedges. This is perhaps my favorite trend of the season because wedges are extremely comfortable, very fashionable and look fantastic with skirts, city shorts, jeans and pants. Nonetheless, don’t use wedges as an excuse to wear chunky heels…wedges should be like the one shown in the background picture…flat in the front by the ball of the foot and toes, but thick in the back, extending the heel.

Lastly, bangles were another trend peppered all over the runway. Even though this tends to be a “younger” look with a bunch of oversized plastic and or wooden bracelets on your arm, you could still make this look your own by wearing a couple of silver or gold bracelets together instead. Remember, that with any new trend, it doesn’t have to be an exact copy of what the models and celebrities are wearing…just have fun with it and adapt it to fit your own sense of style. Wear what works for you and be sure to have lots of fun in the process!
